As part of our wider work with Novus (part of the Manchester College Group) we are undertaking a pragmatic pilot randomized field trial comparing standard classroom-based instruction in literacy to receiving outreach based instruction in a prison setting. This study – which is a pilot trial – involves the randomization of prisoners joining Garth prison, that do not have a Level 1 qualification in English, over a six month period to two different modes of functional skills training in English

What is the need?

The study investigates whether functional skills training in English delivered in workshop settings outside the prison education department raise attainment and improve prisoner behavior relative to functional skills training delivered in the classroom.

What are we doing?

PERU are designing and implementing a pilot trial in Garth prison in order to determine whether a mainstage trial of functional skills is viable

What are the timescales?

Randomisation started on Thursday 24th May 2018.
