What is the need?

Wigan Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) is one of eight areas piloting Substance Misuse Payment by Results (PbR). PERU worked with Wigan Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) between July 2011 and March 2012 to support the development of a tariff system for the Wigan PbR model.

What are we doing?

Using National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS) data PERU conducted an analysis to understand treatment journeys across a range of characteristics for Wigan clients. Data was used to identify the numbers of starts for ‘Stock’ (clients already in the treatment system) and ‘Flow’ (new clients), clients who remained abstinent from drug use, how many clients were discharged from treatment successfully, drug free and how many client re-entered treatment within six and twelve months. This information supported the evidence base of the numbers at each of the payment points by severity of client (High, Medium and Low) based on the NTAs classification criteria.

What were the outcomes?

Reports and data analyses were used to feed into the development of a tariff system for the Wigan PbR model.
