The Manchester International Crime and Justice Film Festival is back!
Returning for its seventh year, the Crime and Justice Film Festival offers an eclectic mix of crime classics and lesser-known gems chosen by crime experts and curated by Manchester Metropolitan University‘s Policy Evaluation and Research Unit. And all screenings are free!
The 2025 Manchester International Crime and Justice Film Festival runs from 7th May to 27th June, with most screenings taking place at the Grosvenor East building, Manchester Metropolitan University’s arts and creative hub. This year’s programme offers films from three continents, ranging from a drama made for the BBC in 1977 to an experimental film first shown at the Venice Biennale – and, as always, our experts will be on hand to introduce the films. Find out more and book tickets at www.crimeandjustice.uk.
A few highlights from this year’s programme:
- Scum – our opening film on Wednesday 7th May is the rarely-seen original BBC TV version of Alan Clarke’s no-holds-barred drama set in a 1970s young offenders’ institutions, giving early starring roles to David Threlfall (Manchester Met drama alumnus) and Ray Winstone
- The Old Oak – Ken Loach’s 2023 film dramatising tensions between Syrian refugees and the residents of a former mining village
- 1001 Martian Nights – a poetic and allusive exploration of memories of the Indonesian military coup of 1965, now so officially denied that it might as well have happened on another planet
- Whistle Down the Wind – a children’s classic which still has a lot to say about crime and justice, innocence and experience
And many more!
