Welcome to this open issue of the British Journal of Community Justice.

If a theme presents itself across the collection of papers in this open issue it is perhaps that of trauma – of individuals and of communities – in which the social and psychological concerns of individuals intersect with the criminal justice system and wider structural problems within society. Our papers in this issue highlight these challenges and potential solutions for different groups interfacing with the justice system as well as communities. A further common theme is the importance of user participation in addressing the issues that emerge, and how community justice can also meet the aims of criminal justice. The papers address the issue of trauma in different ways – how the system can create trauma as well as respond to trauma affected individuals and families, and responses by the voluntary sector and the community.
