The first, offered by a probation professional concerned with\u00a0the implications for practice, is broadly positive about performance targets as a way of\u00a0measuring, and therefore improving, service provision of diverse clients. The second account\u00a0draws on research experience with one group of clients to indicate a more negative view of\u00a0targeting. Both authors agree, however, that targeting is with us, and both in different ways\u00a0argue for qualitative rather than quantitative measures.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-555555\"><strong>A Practitioner Account &#8211; Diversity and Performance in Probation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This article represents a written version of one of two key note speeches delivered at the\u00a0University of Bradford on June 6th 2008. The address, a personal view, was given in my\u00a0capacity as Chief Probation Officer of the West Yorkshire Area of the National Probation\u00a0Service. The focus of my paper was on the growth and implications of the performance\u00a0culture on the work of the Probation Service.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-555555\"><strong>Diversity and Performance &#8211; A Research View<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This article represents written extracts from the second keynote speech given at the \u2018Diversity\u00a0in a Performance Culture Conference\u2019 at the University of Bradford on June 6th 2008. The\u00a0address, a personal view, was given in my capacity as Professor of Social Work at Bradford\u00a0University. The focus of my talk was on the growth and implications of the performance\u00a0culture identified within my personal experience and research, which, broadly speaking<br \/>\nfocused on social work.
