During autumn 2005, the author led a feasibility study investigating the experiences of 17\u00a0Xhosa men and women from the Eastern Cape who had, in some way, fought in the\u00a0struggle for liberation from apartheid in its early days. The study showed, firstly, that it\u00a0was possible to identify people who fell into this category with the help of archive\u00a0collections and local veterans\u2019 associations. Secondly it showed that, with the assistance\u00a0of final year Theology students at the University of Fort Hare, access could be gained to\u00a0these \u2018veterans\u2019 and in-depth qualitative interviews conducted, with the students\u00a0providing translation where necessary. Finally, the interviews themselves highlighted a\u00a0group of people who had sacrificed much for the freedom of their country, some\u00a0 still\u00a0optimistic, some disillusioned, but nearly all with outstanding health and social care\u00a0needs.
