This paper draws on evidence arising from three separate studies to illustrate the gap\u00a0which currently exists between political rhetoric and the reality of victims\u2019 experiences in\u00a0relation to the stated aims of the government to improve the services and support\u00a0provided to victims of crime. Recent years have seen a significant shift in criminal justice\u00a0policy from an offender focused criminal justice system to an unprecedented focus on\u00a0victims, evident in populist political soundbites and the announcements of numerous\u00a0reforms. However, victims and witnesses remain dissatisfied, as reflected in declining\u00a0public confidence in criminal justice agencies despite overall falling rates in crime.\u00a0Acknowledging now that victims and witnesses are vital participants in the criminal\u00a0justice process, this paper examines current government attempts to improve public\u00a0confidence, with the responsibility now being placed upon local Criminal Justice Boards\u00a0to improve services locally.
