[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Abstract<\/span><\/p>\n

Criminological research has historically focused on the crimes of marginalised sections of\u00a0the population and in particular marginalised young people. However, very rarely are\u00a0marginalised young people provided with an opportunity to \u2018tell their story\u2019 and have their\u00a0voices meaningfully heard in the research process. In this paper it is argued that\u00a0ethnographic methodological approaches afford researchers the opportunity to generate in\u00a0depth appreciative data, which can improve criminological understanding of how young\u00a0people experience life on the margins of society and can also provide respondents a with\u00a0\u2018voice\u2019 (Becker, 1967). However, Yates argues that whilst ethnography brings a number of\u00a0strengths it also presents researchers with a range of risks and ethical dilemmas, which\u00a0require careful consideration. He argues that these issues relate to the level of immersion\u00a0and reduction of social distance, which are central to the approach. Yates draws on his\u00a0experience of conducting an ethnographic study of youth and crime in a working class
\ncommunity over a 20 month period to illustrate some of the ethical dilemmas which can\u00a0arise when employing this methodological approach.
