The rise of the evidence-based approach has influenced how criminological research is\u00a0conducted in Britain. Funding bodies increasingly specify a quantitative research design as\u00a0the most appropriate way to determine \u2018what works\u2019. Indeed, there is a growing tendency\u00a0to regard the randomised control trial (RCT) as the \u2018gold standard\u2019 for such studies. In this\u00a0article, restorative justice research is used as an example of the pitfalls of relying on a\u00a0purely quantitative paradigm. By ignoring issues of programme integrity and context,\u00a0RCTs often produce contradictory or inconclusive results.
