It is only in recent times that the organisation has been required\u00a0to work with victims of crime, a group that has traditionally been marginalised within the\u00a0criminal justice system. With the introduction of the Victim\u2019s Charter (Home Office,\u00a01990) this requirement was to contact the victims, or the families of victims, of life\u00a0sentence prisoners to give them information about the offender\u2019s sentence, find out if they\u00a0have any anxieties about the offender\u2019s release, and to ask if they would like to request\u00a0that certain conditions be placed on the offender\u2019s licence. The requirement was extended\u00a0in 1995 to include victims of serious violent or sexual offences where the offender is\u00a0serving four years or more in prison, and again in April 2001 by Probation Circular 62\/2001\u00a0to include \u2018all victims of sexual and violent offenders sentenced to a custodial sentence of\u00a012 months or more\u2019 (National Probation Directorate, 2001).<br \/>\nThis article appraises the extent to which the policies and procedures implemented with\u00a0respect to victims (in two probation areas) help to decrease their marginalisation.
