[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Policy-makers are currently seeking to transform prison regimes so that they\u00a0prepare prisoners for the labour market. However, this article shows that the alleged poor\u00a0work ethic of prisoners has traditionally been viewed as a key element in their\u00a0classification as the ‘undeserving poor’ and that economic transformation has relegated\u00a0many to the margins of the labour force. This raises important questions about the role of\u00a0prison in the post-industrial labour market.
